I started my channel in August 2011, but I didn’t really do anything with it until 2021, when I signed my book deal with Penguin Randomhouse. I figured I should grow my channel, so I had another platform to help with promotion. But I failed miserably. My thumbnails were trash, I had zero idea how to edit my videos, my audio quality was horrible, and I didn’t realize that I needed a better camera than the one on my Macbook. I also thought that because my writing did well, all I had to do was figure out a way to read the articles, and they would do just fine. Boy was I wrong. I gave up after a few dud videos and almost wrote YouTube off. But, I saw the potential, not just for my book, but to build my email list, grow my authority, and make passive AdSense dollars. So, in the spring of 2024, I went back into it. But this time, I studied everything and committed to learning how to edit. I got better results, but I wasn’t really making any headway. That is, until I realized something powerful: I had been focusing on stuff that didn’t matter. ​ As a result, I was doing the right things the wrong way and spending way too much time and money on stuff that didn’t matter. Also, between my first and second attempts, AI technology had made serious strides, saving me time and money. Now, my videos are performing extremely well! Because I focused on what mattered. The best part is that I realized you don’t need any fancy edits, b-roll, or music. You don’t need to spend thousands on equipment.
